New DMV Laws Effective July 1, 2011

Date July 18, 2011

On July 1st, some new laws affecting California motorists took place. The new laws are below, please pass this on to any drivers you know.

Changes in DMV Laws and Procedures

Unmasking the truth: Repeat offenders will get noticed

If you think you’re going to escape that second red light or speeding ticket you just received in the mail by going to Traffic Violator School (TVS), you better think again. As of July 1, motorists will only be able to attend TVS and “mask” a traffic conviction once every 18 months. Second convictions will show on your record and therefore will not be eligible for traffic school. Under the old law, when convictions were stamped “dismissed,” it was equivalent to a verdict of “not guilty,” so it appeared as though there were no violations. The new law prevents frequent offenders from being able to use this loophole as a way to repeatedly attend TVS.

Proactive Steps by DMV Minimize Impact of Driver License and ID Card Delays

Date April 20, 2011

In October 2010, the Department of Motor Vehicles began issuing new, state-of-the-art driver licenses and identification cards. The new cards feature advanced security devices such as raised print and new watermarks designed to ensure the protection of cardholders’ identities.

Since October, nearly 3.2 million new licenses or IDs have already been shipped to, or received by, California cardholders. In recent weeks, due to a high volume of applicants and quality control guidelines, the DMV has encountered delays in the processing of the new cards, but has taken proactive actions to help minimize the impact on the daily lives of California motorists and residents.
